Inlaid Straw Cross by Bo Lopez

$95.00

Bo Lopez, a Santa Fe jeweler and hand engraver, comes from a family of distinguished artists who trained their son Bo to excel in various categories within the Spanish Colonial Traditional Arts. This straw and wood cross appears to be an early work with graceful flowing vines spiraling around small crosses and featuring a larger cross in the center. Dated 1991, wood, straw, pine resin and soot, 11 ¾ x 16 × 1 ½ inches.

The art of straw applique came to the New World with the Spanish Colonialists in the late 15th Century. For the settlers, straw became a substitution for precious materials such as gold or silver. The art form has carried on into the present day, especially popular at the annual Spanish Market in Santa Fe.
