Krissa Lopez Inlaid Straw Cross

$250.00

This straw and wood cross by Santera Krissa Lopez is very finely crafted with sprays of straw Easter lilies arranged on the cross. Dated 6/2003, with 2 small holes drilled in the top of the cross and a string loop, signed and dated by the artist on the back along with a small drawing of Calvary, with three crosses upon a hill; wood, straw, pine resin and soot, 5 ⅛ x 9 ¼ × ⅝ inches.

The art of straw applique came to the New World with the Spanish Colonialists in the late 15th Century. At that time, making devotional art was often made with materials that substituted for precious materials sucha as gold and silver—and straw was the “poor man’s gold” because it shines and glitters like gold in these intricately made crosses. The art form has carried on into the present day, and is especially popular at the annual Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe.
