Monica Sosaya Halford (b. 1931) is a Santa Fe artist dedicated to sharing and preserving the rich, artistic culture of her proud heritage. She has been a multiple award winner at the annual Santa Fe Traditional Spanish Market, specializing painted Santos and also in Colcha embroidery.
Saint Nicholas was an early Christian bishop in the turbulent times of the 3rd Century of the Roman Empire, who became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his kindness toward children, and his concern for sailors and ships. He became more and more well-known and revered as the centuries passed, and today he is honored for his goodness and generosity during the Christmas holidays. December 6th is his feast day.
Retablo is 7 × 9 × ¾ inches, painted with traditional pigments, with a leather thong threaded and knotted at the top, for hanging. Signed “Monica 96” on lower right corner, and inscribed with pencil “San Nicholas” Monica Sosaya Halford 1996” on the verso.
