Wood retablo featuring the crowned and haloed San Jose, the guardian of Mary and Jesus, patron saint of fathers, house hunters, families and husbands. Skillfully painted by Mary Jo Madrid, Jose holds aloft in one hand his staff of lily flowers and the Baby Jesus on his other arm. Santera Mary Jo Madrid, from Cañon Plaza near Vallecitos, NM, and her husband Jimmy, a noted tinsmith, often collaborated on works and participated in the annual Santa Fe Spanish Market. The artist and her son Nicolas, also a maker of tin work, continue the tradition to this day.

The sides of the wooden plaque are painted red, a hide thong is strung through the sides and out of the top edge for wall hanging. On the rear is a paper sticker listing the attributes of San Jose, the signature “Madrid 2001”, and “Mary Jo Madrid” penciled underneath the paper label. 3 ½ x 6 ½ x ¾ inches.
