San Raphel Retablo
San Raphael painted on tin, by Anita Romero Jones (1930 -2013). Anita Romero Jones, from Santa Fe, New Mexico, began her journey as a Santera when she was 40 years old, and became well-known for her bultos (carved statues of saints and other religious figures), retablos and other Spanish New Mexico crafts. Her work in the traditional arts of New Mexico is recognized as exceptional. Here is San Raphael, the Archangel, protector and healer, patron of travelers, artists, fishermen, health and healing. Jones depicts the winged saint with his staff and hobo bag in one hand and fish in the other. The retablo shows the saint within a delicately painted framework topped with a cross.
The retablo is in excellent condition, but of note is the craqueleur and missing pigments on his robe. Circa late 1980s - 1990s, 2 ⅝ inches wide, 6 ¼ inches tall, signed and labeled on the rear, with a soldered tin loop for hanging.
