St. Francis Bulto by Sabinita Lopez Ortiz

$295.00

An elegant carving by Sabinita Lopez Ortiz, a renowned Santera from Cordova, New Mexico, and adopted daughter of George T. Lopez. Sabinita and her family continue to follow the the Cordova tradition of making simple, unpainted, chip-carved bultos (sculptural carvings of saints).

This bulto represents San Francisco de Asis, known especially for his care for nature and animals, in addition to performing many miracles and founding the religious order of Franciscans. This carving, depicting St Francis with a squirrel on one shoulder and a dove in his hands, is made of aspen wood, 12 ¾ inches tall on its base, with the honey-golden patina of age (circa 1990s), signed on the bottom of the base.
