St. Gertrude Retablo, Anita Romero Jones
Anita Romero Jones (1930 -2013) from Santa Fe, New Mexico, began her journey as a Santera when she was 40 years old, and became well-known for her bultos (carved statues of saints and other religious figures), retablos and other Spanish New Mexico crafts. Her work in the traditional arts of New Mexico is recognized as exceptional. Here is Saint Gertrude, (also known as St. Gertrude the Great) was a German nun known for her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, whose intercession is invoked for souls in purgatory, and for living sinners. The retablo shows the haloed saint standing with a crozier in one hand and a radiant heart upon her breast. The saint is depicted within a beautiful small space.
The retablo is in very good condition, but note the small amount of craqueleur and missing pigments on the crozeier and her halo. Circa 1990,, 2 ⅝ inches wide, 4 ¼ inches tall, signed and titled on the rear, with a twine loop for hanging.
