Na’ataska, or Black Ogre, Kachina’s task is to feed the kachinas for the Bean Planting ceremonies. He does this by going from house to house in the village threatening to take away bad children, to be eaten. The ogres have exaggerated heads with bulging eyes, heavy long snout and horns, terrifying! At last the Na’ataska bargains with the parents, who offer food in exchange for their children.

This kachina doll is carved by well-known Hopi artist Otto Pentewa (1886 – 1961). Circa 1930s, made from cottonwood root, paint, horsehair, feathers and string, 4 ¾ inches tall.
