Hopi Morning Singer Kachina

$795.00

Hopi Early Morning Singer or Talavai Kachina, 1940s, Cottonwood and Paint, 10 inches tall. At one time the Morning Singer Kachina stood on the rooftops singing songs to wake the Hopi people on the days of the ceremonies, now he gives toys and gifts to the children during the dances. He is sometimes depicted wearing a white robe, since he rises in the cold dawn.

The Talavai headdress features a sky blue face with large red ears and a tube-like snout. The top of his head is painted bold black and white stripes, and this doll may have had an array of long black and white feathers atop like the rays of the sun. On the cheeks are symbols of the sun rising, and rain symbols on the back of the head. This doll has water damage, present in the fading of the paint colors. Circa 1940s, made of cottonwood, pigment, feathers and stains, with a cloth cross body strap, 9 ½ inches tall.
