Old Style White Ogre Kachina

$350.00

The powerful White Ogre (Wiharu) kachiina is traditionally known as a disciplinarian of small children and thus a community protector, appearing in Hopi ceremonies alongside the Black Ogre as they collect food from the people to feed the kacinas.

This kachina doll is unsigned, circa 1990 and carved in the “Old Style” or “Traditional Style”: carved in the manner of the early kachinas with simple shapes and natural pigments. Old Style Carvers have their own distinctive styles, and this cottonwood doll has an exaggerated head with bulging eyes, a heavy long snout and horns that are features of the ogre kachinas. Adorned with fabric fur and hide scraps and feathers and painted in earthy red, black and green, 11 inches tall.
