Route 66 Snow Kachina

The Snow, or Nuvak, Kachina brings the winter snows that bring the seeds to life Spring. Novak most often appears in the Niman Dance in Summer.

This little kachina doll is a Route 66 doll, which were made by Hopi carvers for the tourist trade at train stations and in trading posts along Route 66 in the 1940s - 1970s. Route 66 kachina dolls are made in a simplified and uniform style, but the essential details of each kachina are clear. Made from cottonwood, with paint and string—a white feather and cotton fluff would have been placed on its head. Circa 1960s, 3 inches tall.
