Phyllis Leno, born in 1943, learned the art of pottery making from her mother Juana Leno, one the four Acoma Pueblo Matriarchs of Acoma Pueblo potters from the early 20th century. Phyllis makes traditional forms of Acoma pottery, including animal figures and owls. This little round bodied owl has classic Acoma style: thin walls, a white base, or slip, with finely painted features of the owl; it is signed on the bottom “Acoma Pueblo, NM, P. Leno”. Mid-Twentieth Century, 2 ¾ inches tall.
