Day of the Dead Paper Mache Figures

$400.00

A Devil and a Skeleton, cartoony and impish Dia de los Muertos Papier Mache Figures, a diablito and his dead skeleton self (calaca)—imported from Mexico by Dennis Hopper for the Return Gallery in Taos, ca. late 1970s.

Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd; in Mexico it is a joyful time to honor and welcome back the souls of deceased loved ones.

The two figures are pre-1950s, from Oaxaca, Mexico; they are in an understandably fragile state, with small tears and wear, but they have a strong presence. Paper, flour paste, wire armatures, poster paint with wire hoops for hanging (although they stand on their own), 10 inches tall x 6 inches wide and deep. Sold as a pair.
