Gold Painted Tramp Art Frame

$250.00

Beautiful Tramp Art Frame with three levels of wood, chip-carved, with the top layer forming a zig-zag line. the lowest layer features an intricately cut pattern of strawberry leaves with tiny chips carved at the edges. At each corner is a little cross or “X” shape (missing the top right piece). The back of the frame has a rough hewn thin board (currently held in place with adhesive paper), with room to slip a photograph or drawing into, and a loop of wire for hanging. This frame is probably European, from the turn of the last century, 6 × 7 ¾ inches.

Tramp Art originated in the 1850s, reaching its height of popluarity during the Depression years in America. It consisted of a simple woodworking style using cigar box wood, notched or carved with a knife, and layered with glue or nails to make pleasing designs. During the Depression out-of-work and itinerant “tramps” might make charming objects in exchange for a little money or food.
